We’re just going to say it — the lineup for this year’s Afro-Punk Fest is mindblowingly awesome. The free two-day festival, now in its sixth year, has always featured great bands, but this year they’ve taken it to a whole new level. On Saturday, featured performers include Santigold, Gym Class Heroes, Toto y Moi, Kenna, and Das Racist; Sunday’s big names include Janelle Monae and Cee Lo Green. Though the musical acts are exciting, in true festival spirit, music isn’t the only draw. In homage to the festival’s punk roots, there will be a skate competition on Saturday and a BMX one on Sunday, as well as an artist painting hundreds of skateboards to create a “Skate Artwall.” There will also be a custom bike show, in partnership with Harley-Davidson and Denim and Chrome, that will double as the backdrop for a calendar shoot. If bass and bikes aren’t the cause of the rumbling you’re hearing, satisfy your hungry stomach at the Afro-Punk Bites & Beats Food Truck Festival, featuring over twenty of the top city food trucks like Korilla BBQ, Schnitzel & Things, Mexicue, and Van Leeuwen.
