Are you a fan of good music books? The type of person whose eclectic reading list consists of legendary music writer Robert Palmer’s classic Deep Blues, Keith Richards’ wonderful memoir Life, or an installment from the 33 1/3 series by Continuum? Then the NYC Music Book Club might be the reading community you’re looking for.
A partnership between Feedback Press, and Greenpoint’s WORD bookstore, the book club will feature monthly discussions on music writing. It is led by Daphne Carr of Feedback Press and the editor of the Best Music Writing series and Tobias Carroll.
The following is a list of the titles that will be discussed at the club—they’re all available for order through WORD:
April: Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture by Alice Echols
May: But Beautiful: A Book About Jazz by Geoff Dyer
June: Talking Heads’ Fear of Music by Jonathan Lethem
July: On Michael Jackson by Margo Jefferson
August: The Chitlin’ Circuit: And the Road to Rock ’n’ Roll by Preston Lauterbach
September: Love Rock Revolution: K Records and the Rise of Independent Music by Mark Baumgarten
October: Heroes and Villains: Essays on Music, Movies, Comics, and Culture by David Hajdu
The NYC Music Book Club will be held on the second Saturday of the month at 3 p.m. at WORD, 126 Franklin Street in Greenpoint. That gives you almost two weeks to read Hot Stuff for the first meeting.
