If there are two things the recent muggy weather has us ready for, it’s block parties and air conditioning. Unfortunately, most of the time, those two things are mutually exclusive—except for this month’s First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum. The theme du jour is Brooklyn Block Party, and they’ve managed to pull together a lineup that reflects the best of partying outdoors while still taking advantage of the great museum space. Highlights include an opening performance by Latin group Son de Madre; a screening of Hands to the Sky, a documentary on outdoor house music dance parties; and a lecture by Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas from Blue Marble Ice Cream on their nonprofit, Blue Marble Dreams, which has helped women in Rwanda open an ice cream shop in their own community. And of course, a block party is nothing without dancing and documentation, so be sure to end the night getting down at the Beats, Blocks & Brooklyn-themed DJ set (promising music from Biggie and the Beasties), and striking a pose for street style photogs Jamel Shabazz, Lafotographeuse, Delphine Fawundu-Buford, and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn.
