The reason there’s free minigolf and sculptural works you can play in all summer long at Governors Island can be traced to FIGMENT, a completely volunteer-run, participatory, free art festival for adults and kids that runs this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. This year the minigolf course includes a hole from last year fashioned out of an oversized fly swatter and one inspired by Pachinko, and the sculpture garden features interactive works like a wooden TV that you can step inside and broadcast your own imaginary shows. Those two elements of the festival will stay on the island through September, but there are many fleeting events you can only take part in this weekend, all designed to spark the kind of fun and wonder you experienced effortlessly as a kid.
