There’s so much good stuff going on in Brooklyn that we can’t fit it all into three emails a week (even when we jam-pack the Tip Sheet). Newsy bits, reviews and lots of photos find a place to live on the BB blog. Here are a few of our favorite posts from June:
Eats
Kate Brack checked out Donna, a newish Williamsburg bar and snack spot; and food writer Brendan Spiegel reviewed Allswell, recommended Kosher cones at The Ice Cream House, and identified four West Coast food trends that need to pop up in Brooklyn sometime soon. Alia Akkam, deputy editor of Edible Queens offered up a list of five places to eat in Astoria and our favorite summer intern, Julie Strickland, wrote about the upcoming Great Hot Dog Cookoff–the first big event at the once-abandoned Pfizer plant on Flushing Avenue.
Kids
Samantha Moeller, aka The Hipster Mom, has rescued our Kids section from its Internet coma. With her on board, we’re now sending out BB Kids emails each week (if you sign up now you may even get today’s!), filled with kids events, interviews, party ideas, and inspiration for some quality time away from the chitlins. Among the gems this month: Samantha shot a portrait of a super styly mom and her son and got the word on a new clothing line for kids; Julie compiled a guide to Brooklyn’s kids pools and swim lessons, and BB founder Nicole Davis interviewed Victoria Brown about what she cooks for her kids and asked Christine Onorati which books she likes to read her son at night.
Weird stuff
There were a few posts on the blog this month that defied neat categorization, and they were also some of our favorites. We turned you on (of off of) a line of perfumes based on the movie Labyrinth, wrote about a weekly séance in Williamsburg and explained the wonderful scent of linden trees, which has sadly, now faded from the air.
How does the joke go? Something about a lobster on a piano?

We’re lucky to have some very good photographers at our beck and call. Liza Eckert documented the ever-awesome Mermaid Parade, took some shots of a new mural in DUMBO and also photographed last weekend’s kite festival in Brooklyn Bridge Park. And Jordan Galloway attended the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Spring Gala to take some stunning shots of living ballgowns constructed out of plants by artist Nicole Dextras.
Arts
Katya Schapiro reviewed WNYC’s Kings County show at The Bell House, Sara Christoph visited 56 Bogart Street during Bushwick Open Studios, and Julie Strickland filled us in on the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio–a filmmaking residency that starts this fall and is accepting applications through Saturday. Our ever-prolific music writer David Chiu wrote about Balthrop, Alabama; Jens Lekman and Ava Luna, among several other bands. Finally, if you need a little funny to wash all that down, Kyle McGovern posted about Dale Radio Live! a monthly comedy show and podcast happening tonight in Gowanus.
