For the eighth summer in a row, the New York Writers Coalition has led free writing workshops in Fort Greene Park that encourage young authors to flex their creative muscles. The outdoor classes yield fantastic tales and poems–like this line from 11-year-old Daniel Maiorana’s story about a man who plots to steal the moon: “He was a rich inventor and casino man, and led a criminal syndicate in which he made billions of illegal money (and billions of legal).” You can hear more stories and poems by the program’s graduates during the Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival this Saturday at 3pm, when established authors Jessica Hagedorn, Earl Lovelace and Tayari Jones will read alongside the precocious writers. Greenlight Bookstore, one of the festival’s presenters, will be selling books by featured authors at the park, and will host the after party at the store with drinks and refreshments at 6pm.
