Though the weather outside is verging on frightful, this might be one of the only real winter weather weekends we’ll get this year, so instead of staying home and waiting for word from Punxsutawney Phil, venture out and make the most of the season with Illuminated at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This winter festival pop-up has something to offer every snowy season fan. Saturday is family-oriented with Swedish yard games, face-painting and storytelling with Christopher Agostino, and group activities like building an urban Mandala out of recycled treasures. Sunday has a winter bird walk with naturalist Brad Klein, a dramatic performance of the “Troll’s Garden” and other Swedish fairy tales, and a DIY make-your-own-pine-needle-pillow you get to take home when the day is done. Both days include Stockholm hot chocolate, hot mulled wine, and Swedish pepparkakor cookies to enjoy. The entire festival is free with BBG admission, and a chance to see a favorite spot in a whole new light. And did we mention the Lite-Brite Lounge, which is, gloriously, exactly what it sounds like?
