Nick Offerman (of Parks and Recreation fame), composer Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, and other special guests will appear at BAMcinématek this Friday for the New York theatrical premiere of Somebody Up There Likes Me, a “highly original and delightfully unorthodox” (The Hollywood Reporter) journey through three decades of friendship, frustrated romance, and unexpected tragedy.  A tale of two slacker buddies, their breadstick-devouring object of affection, and a youth-endowing magical suitcase, the film represents American comedy at its most imaginative and idiosyncratic, combining charmingly lo-fi realism with surprising flights of fantasy.

While Somebody Up There Likes Me marks a leap forward for director Bob Byington, one of the leading figures in today’s Austin, TX film scene, it maintains the charming homespun quality that made his breakthrough, Harmony and Me, a critical success. Boasting rapid-fire one-liners, supporting performances by Will and Grace’s Megan Mullaly and indie stalwarts Andrew Bujalski, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Alex Ross Perry, and a series of animated sequences courtesy of Bob Sabiston (the wizard behind A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life), this prize-winning festival hit balances its honest depiction of divorce, aging, and professional ennui with a mixture of cutting sarcasm and warm-hearted whimsy.

The New York theatrical premiere is Friday and we have 3 pairs of tickets to give away for the 7 and 9:30pm screenings on Saturday. Just tell us your preferred showtime in an email, and we’ll announce the winners tomorrow at 5pm.
