Fun fact: Mel Brooks, king of the silly comedy, grew up in Williamsburg (S. 3rd Street to be exact). It’s fitting, then, that two of his all-time greats are screening just a few blocks away as part of Nitehawk Cinema’s Perfect Parodies brunch series during the month of June. On tap this weekend is his beloved Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs, which I saw in the theater with my cousins in 1987. Back then, I thought that a main character being named Barf was the apex of comedic achievement, and though I’d like to think my tastes have matured a little, I still think the movie is hilarious. Another classic Brooks film, Young Frankenstein, and everybody’s favorite source of quotes, Airplane!, are scheduled for later weekends. Tickets to Spaceballs are $11 and are available here. –KH
