Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), in partnership with South Brooklyn Running Club, presents the Brooklyn Greenway Half—the only half marathon and 5K exclusively on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The third annual Brooklyn Greenway Half will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015.
The Brooklyn Greenway Half takes runners on a 13.1-mile journey along the waterfront on a Red Hook-to-Greenpoint loop, offering memorable views of the skylines of midtown and lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges. The 5K course leaves from the Columbia Waterfront District, runs through Brooklyn Bridge Park and turns around at Jane’s Carousel.
The run highlights Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s progress toward achieving a fully completed greenway along the Brooklyn waterfront, as well as showcasing such city, state and industrial parks as Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Following the run, participants are invited to attend the awards ceremony and celebrate their achievement at the after-party.
“The views were great, and seeing and using new pieces of the greenway were fantastic,” said a past Brooklyn Greenway Half participant. “This was the first time I was able to make a connection between all the neighborhoods along the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and now I will be able to incorporate this route into my future runs.”
All participants from the half marathon and 5K will be bit-chip timed by FastFinishes race management and timing services, and will receive a finisher medal.
By running the Brooklyn Greenway Half, participants will be supporting the development, establishment, and long term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. When complete, this 14-mile landscaped route for pedestrians, runners and cyclists will connect neighborhood parks and open spaces from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge.
