Precious but Not pricey, gifts from Owl and Thistle General Store

Since it opened its doors in Crown Heights four years ago, Owl and Thistle General Store has stayed true to its “general store” moniker. Owner Keri Cavanaugh has a knack for finding precious, but not too pricey Brooklyn-made, Fair Trade and sustainable gifts for all ages, so you can easily walk in here and cross multiple generations off your list. (Trust us, we’ve done it.)

Cavanaugh also offers terrific crafty classes, too—like a Sew Your Own Stocking workshop this Thursday—so if you’re shopping for a DIY lover, a gift card that they can apply toward any class makes a thoughtful gift.

The shop’s holiday hours are Monday through Friday 11-8pm,  Saturday 10-8pm, Sunday 10-7pm, and you can always purchase gifts online, too. Just order by Dec. 20 for guaranteed Dec. 24 delivery, or choose the next-day shipping option.

Here are five great ideas for holiday gifts.

This leather tote is handcrafted in a standout shade of red using contrasting leather and suede panels and sturdy straps. It’s unlined to keep it lightweight and a zip pocket inside means you don’t have to dig deep for your keys or wallet.

Brooklyn pride runs deep, and these retro, knit pom pom hats will broadcast your neighborhood love all winter long. Available in adult and kids’ sizes.

This necklace has been around the block, over the curb, and down the half pipe, because each pendant, hung on an antique bronze chain, is made from recycled skateboard decks. No two are the same, and the colors are from the original design, it’s not painted on afterward. Your favorite skate punk will be stoked.

Instead of buying that giraffe teething toy that every baby in Brooklyn seems to come equipped with, get this handmade organic lion baby rattle for your favorite little one. Made from organic cotton and fill, and non-toxic, water-based inks, it’s entirely safe for curious kids.

Owl and Thistle sells a number of artisanal food collections, but this Brooklyn spice gift box is perfect for those who like it hot. The bottle of Mike’s Hot Honey, jars of Redhead Hot Sauce and Brooklyn Delhi Achaar and bag of Butter & Scotch’s Green Chile Margarita Caramel Corn all pack plenty of heat.
