The Year of the Dog festivities

By

The Year of the Dog is upon us, and before the colorful parades take place in Chinatown, Flushing, and Sunset Park next weekend, you can start celebrating the Lunar New Year this Friday at the midday New Year Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival taking place in Sarah D. Roosevelt Park on Grand Street at 1pm. If anything can ward off evil spirits, it’s gotta be 600,000 lit firecrackers, and regardless there will also be lion dances, craft vendors, and tons of dumplings and other traditional treats available for purchase. Can’t steal away from work in the middle of the day? No worries– you can head to MOFAD on Friday evening for a special Chinese New Year Celebration featuring the museum’s current Chow: Making the Chinese American Restaurant exhibit as well as a variety of holiday dishes like lo hei, a salad meant to bring you prosperity, and two beers. Doors open at 6pm and tickets are $25 each.
