Guadalupe Inn: Come for the guacamole, stay for the music

Dinner and a show are a package deal at Guadalupe Inn, a Mexican supper club in Bushwick. The moderately upscale restaurant offers live performances five nights a week, from burlesque shows to Bossa Nova brunch, and $3 tacos all night every Tuesday.

On a recent Monday night, when the restaurant is typically closed for regular service, the artist collective The Wild Honey Pie invited us to their live music dinner party featuring the first-ever acoustic performance from Computer Magic, aka Danielle “Danz” Johnson.

Guadalupe Inn’s resident chef Ivan Garcia served a delicious three-course meal to a packed dining room (that doubles as an intimate performance space), accompanied by a choice of signature cocktail the Guadalupe Inn Margarita—lime (highly recommended) or watermelon jalapeno. Tecate beer and shots of Pilot Kombucha were on the house, compliments of event sponsors. Tickets were sold at $50, and the Margaritas were discounted from the usual menu price of $13 to $10.

The first taste of Garcia’s guacamole silenced any skepticism about chips and guac being treated as its own course. We can’t tell you what he’s done to make it so special, but he’s definitely done something right. A vegetarian Chile Relleno followed, and the simple but satisfying meal ended with a gorgeously textured Flan de Elote — and plans to come back and see/taste what Garcia can do with an expanded menu.

Wild Honey Pie has been curating musical dinner events and art-driven weekend getaways since circa 2015. Think of their events as a kind of guided party, with WHP’s founder and CEO Eric Weiner as the congenial host. These happenings are only the tip of the iceberg of what The Wild Honey Pie does — check out their website and this recent Fast Company profile to learn more — but like most of their productions, including their annual “Welcome Campers” music festival, the festive but intimate parties are intended to melt the invisible wall between artists and fans.

The events are also a showcase for the venues that host them. At a glance, the unassuming corner spot on the industrial edge of Morgantown could be mistaken for just another overly-Americanized Mexican spot. Once inside it’s clear that Guadalupe Inn is anything but, and has a vision all its own.

This week: The Wild Honey Pie is bringing Plastic Picnic to Le Fanfare in Greenpoint for a musical dinner party. Wednesday, June 13 at 7 p.m.; $50
