A very busy Saturday in September: Pig Island, Gowanus Block Party, Bushwig and the Beard and Moustache Competition

September’s back-to-school vibe always makes me feel a little more productive than usual, and that is a good thing this week as it turns out there is a LOT happening this Saturday, Sept 9. Pig Island, the annual hog roast competition featuring shocking amounts of pork prepared by local chefs, is back for its ninth year from 11:30am-4pm in Red Hook, and there are still tickets available for $85, which includes unlimited food, drinks, live music, and fun. Just a quick Citibike ride away, The Bell House will be celebrating a decade on 7th Street at an all-day Gowanus Block Party, with food, drinks, interactive games for all ages, music, and an afterparty. The event is free and runs from noon-9pm, but if you want to see Hot Snakes play the venue live at 9pm, you’ll need to buy a $25 ticket. A bit further south, the grizzliest guys from all over will descend upon Coney Island to compete in the 11th annual Beard and Moustache Competition at Sideshows by the Seashore starting at 8pm. Competitors will vie for titles like Best in Show, Carny Trash, and Coney Island Curl, and more, all judged by a panel of bewhiskered celebrities. Tickets for registrants and participants are $25 each. Meanwhile, across town, at the Knockdown Center, more than 150 drag performers from all over the world will be taking the stage for the first day of Bushwig 2018, the annual queer festival that draws thousands of revelers to Queens for music, dancing, and 23 hours straight of live performances. Tickets start at $35, Saturday’s program runs from 1pm-2am, and this party sounds FUN.
