Sunday field trip: A summer gala of a bygone era

By

Get yourself up to Yonkers on Sunday (just a half hour from Grand Central) for Atlas Obscura’s third annual Great Forgotten Garden Party, an immersive outdoor performance and gala set in the extraordinary gardens of the onetime home of Samuel and Minnie Untermyer. (If this event sounds familiar, it’s because it was rescheduled to July 28 after last week’s heat wave.) The couple, who inhabited the property in the early 1900s, was known for their elaborate parties featuring performances by well-known artists of the era with dramatic views of the Hudson River and the Palisades as a backdrop. This particular soiree promises a diverse program of talent, including renowned thereminist Armen Ra, psychedelic musicians Mr. Twin Sister, and the Corpus Callosum Dance Company, as well as the rare opportunity to roam the grounds of this historic place on your own. Festive dress is encouraged, and you can bring a picnic if you want, but food and drink will be available for purchase. Tickets are $70, and the festivities run from 5-10pm.
