Surf x music x cinema at Nitehawk

By

The end of summer seems like a good time to watch a surf flick, right?  In Self Discovery for Social Survival, world-champion pro-surfers ride waves in the Maldives, Iceland and Mexico to a soundtrack that comes to life as the film alternates between stunning shots of surfing and recording sessions with musicians including Allah Las, Connan Mockasin, and Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT. I’m curious to see how it all fits together, and a post-screening Q&A with director Chris Gentile and surf journalist Tyler Breuer should illuminate some of the why and the how of this unique endeavor. The screening starts at 7pm at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg, and tickets are $18.
