First Class Passengers on a Sinking Ship

By

First Class Passengers on a Sinking Ship is a new book by SUNY Albany professor Richard Lachmann that examines the United States’s decline as a global power. The book considers the trends and forces that have led to this decline, comparing America’s trajectory to the histories of the Dutch and British empires. As someone who is rather relieved at the prospect of the U.S. having less power to abuse, I’ll be curious to learn more about the broader historical context around this, and why it’s happening.

Lachmann will be joined by NYU sociology professor Vivek Chibber for a book discussion at Verso in DUMBO on Wednesday, February 12. The event is free and begins at 7pm.
