A must-see series honoring black women in cinema

By

Film Forum’s four-week festival, BLACK WOMEN: Trailblazing African American Actresses & Images, 1920 – 2001 comes to an end on Thursday, February 13. The series covers 80 years of groundbreaking performances in 60 films, including several also directed by black women. Head to Film Forum on Tuesday, February 11 to catch Losing Ground, a beautiful low-budget film from 1982, directed by Kathleen Collins and starring Seret Scott. If you can’t make those showtimes (12:30pm and 4:10pm), try to see Sparkle at 8:10pm. This film from 1976 features music by Curtis Mayfield, and follows the rise of three sisters who form a singing group in the 1950s, à la The Supremes. Expect great songs and fabulous costumes. Monster’s Ball, starring Halle Berry, who became the first woman of color to win an Oscar when she was awarded Best Actress for this role, screens at 6:10pm. See the full schedule for more opportunities to watch these films and others, before this wonderful and rare festival closes. Tickets are $15, or $9 for Film Forum members.
