The end of winter is my favorite season to enjoy museums. When it’s still dark between 5-6pm and I’m not in the mood to head to a crowded restaurant with an expensive bill for my evening plans, I get inspired by nighttime museum visits.
The Whitney Museum of American Art is one of the best places to go on such an escapade, as they offer Pay-What-You-Wish every Friday night from 7-9:30pm. You can’t book these tickets in advance, so expect a line to see their new exhibit previewed in our February Culture Essentials, Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925–1945 which acclaimed art critic Jerry Saltz deemed the most relevant show of the 21st century.
Up through mid-May, spend a Friday night getting deep into these large murals by some of the most politically and artistically renowned Mexican artists who haven’t been given the recognition they deserve for how much influence they still have on American artistic expression.
